Cdt Eyong (left) Promoter |
In the lips of all in Eyanchang these days
is the football competition that is currently going on in the village.
From one
spot to another you will not stop hearing people talking about how their
quarter teams will win the other teams or how their teams are stronger than the
others.
This has left some who are married to other
quarters perplexed of which quarter to support; whether their native quarters
or the quarters they are married to.
Indeed the village is movable these
holidays thanks to Commandant Eyong who thought it wise to promote this inter-quarters
football competition as a means of keeping holidays makers busy and active.
In a short chat with Cdt Eyong, this
reporter discovered the enthusiasm in him and how he enjoyed seeing the
competition. He revealed to me that it is good to have this kind of competition
because it is very interesting to see youths play than allowing them to be involved
in all forms of ills. He does not just promote but also sees to the smooth
organisation of the competition so as to help to promote unity and peace in the
village as a whole.
Cheering fans |
He will abandon all his commitments and sit
there to watch the matches and at times even advice the players on good conduct
on the pitch especially as he used to play for the village himself in his
youthful age.
What stroke me most is the way the competition
brought together everybody in the village to support their various quarter
teams and the sportsmanship that was exercised by all. There was cheering and
shouting in support of one team or the other and it gives the joyful atmosphere
of a true united village.
This gesture of Cdt Eyong has moved even women
and children to contribute for their respective teams to afford for beautiful
playing kits for their players. The colourful nature of these kits make you
feel like being in front of your tv screens.
One of the quarter heads whispered to me
that they are calling on all Eyanchang elements in the diaspora to support them
by sending their own contributions no matter how small it may be.
You may not do like Cdt Eyong; but you can
send your little contribution through your quarter head to support your quarter
team.
